Planning ahead for the crazy confluence of Cinco de Mayo and Derby Day, here is my Mint Julep recipe that is guaranteed to please all year. If there is any left over.
Your ingredients: 1 bottle Maker’s, 1/2 cup sugar, big bunch of mint, 1 cup water
Your Method: Put the water, sugar, and 1/2 the mint in a pan, simmer down to a thick simple syrup.
THERE you go.
When the temperature is down (don’t want to scald the booze), pour a cup or two of the bourbon out, stuff the rest of the mint right down in the bottle. Add the syrup. Top up with as much bourbon as you can.
Bonus: Drink the rest!
I’ve made this as much as 2 months in advance. This year? Two days, because I completely forgot. Anyway.
When it’s time, pour over crushed ice and some fresh mint in a rocks glass.
